Abstract

Controlling the structural build-up and rheology of geopolymers for extrusion-based 3D printing is quite challenging due to their incompatibility with currently available set accelerators and high sensitivity to changes in mix proportions and environmental conditions. In this study, a novel two-pipe mixing strategy was developed to enhance the structural build-up of geopolymer concrete and simultaneously provide beneficial utilization of municipal incineration solid waste bottom ash (MSWIBA) and blast furnace slag (GGBS) for geopolymerization reaction re-initiation. In this regard, a one-part geopolymer based on MSWIBA and GGBS was first developed, and the effects of various additives on its working properties and rheology were evaluated. Reaction mechanism, pore structure, and microstructure analysis were carried out using isothermal calorimetry, SEM-EDS, QXRD, and MIP tests. A novel two-pipe mixing strategy for such a one-part geopolymer was then devised and formulated by dividing it into two flowable mixes with a long open time and good buildability. They were pumped through two separate pipes for near-nozzle mixing to achieve the required set-on-demand hardening. The printing performance of the geopolymer was evaluated to manifest the feasibility of using the developed mixes and such a mixing strategy. Results showed that partial dissolution of the activator during the initial mixing in two pipes had a positive impact on structure buildup and early strength. The proposed two-pipe mixing strategy is suitable for utilizing different types of waste and printing large structures with long open time and an increased rate of structural build-up.
