Abstract
Much is already known about the impacts generated by the most used construction materials, such as concrete, steel, and wood. In addition, several solutions to reduce these impacts have already been proposed and tested worldwide, such as using recycled aggregates in concrete production (Figueiredo & Haddad, 2022). The literature also discusses the adoption of construction methods to minimize material waste, directly affecting sustainability and bringing many benefits to the construction industry. This is the case of prefabricated modular construction, a process in which a building is constructed off-site with subsequent assembly at the building site (Olawumi et al., 2022). Experts and scholars have been exploring various technologies, materials, and design concepts to be applied to construction projects. However, these efforts are usually limited to specific areas and may not bring about a significant change in an industry as a whole. Besides, although the conversation about sustainability in construction has been gaining steam worldwide among professionals and researchers, the literature still lacks accurate and comprehensive case studies on construction material selection with a focus on sustainability. This is particularly notorious if one considers the joint assessment of the three pillars of sustainability (i.e., environmental, social, and economic). In turn, consumers’ demand for eco-friendly products and services has been growing, compelling companies to adapt their practices. It is vital for governments and international organizations to continue implementing policies and initiatives that promote sustainability worldwide. It is also imperative that all stakeholders, including businesses, governments, and individuals, take responsibility and work together toward a more sustainable future.
