Abstract
At the intersection of computational design, acoustics, and robotic fabrication, this research explores the use of clay in 3D-printed acoustic walls. Addressing the often overlooked role of sound in built environments, this study uses advancements in design and fabrication technologies to integrate acoustic performance directly into architectural elements from the onset, focusing on using natural materials. By investigating the acoustic properties of 3D-printed clay, a novel design-to-fabrication workflow is developed that serves room-dividing functions and optimizes acoustic performance through bespoke clay bricks designed with standard interfaces and acoustically effective surfaces. Adopting a multi-scalar approach across macro-, meso-, and microscales, the research triggers broadband sound diffusion, introduces sound absorption through varying surface openings, and explores infill strategies to ensure resonant absorption and structural stability. These strategies are applied through the design, fabrication, and acoustic evaluation of prototypes, culminating in a case study of a library café room divider that addresses its unique acoustic challenges. Implemented as a parametric design tool in Grasshopper, this workflow facilitates the creation of free-standing walls that harmonize diffusive and absorptive properties with successful infill strategies, ensuring printability and structural integrity.
