Abstract

3D concrete printing (3DCP) is being rapidly developed to face climate change by using less material. However, material efficiency is only one step toward more sustainable construction. Such methodologies need to be combined with considerations of architectural requirements, flexibility of use, and changes throughout the building's life cycle. Modifying conventionally manufactured objects to install technical comportments is wasteful and labour-intensive. Moreover, in lightweight fabrication, alterations can lead to a collapse and are less flexible in terms of conversion. This study tackles the mentioned problem in the context of in-situ printed walls, by presenting a digital workflow for the additive manufacturing of building elements with built-in cavities for tubing and fixtures. For this purpose, standard regulations for technical installations were integrated into a set of rules for the computation of the path structure for 3DCP. This implementation within the digital planning process of 3DCP will enhance the long-term use of printed building elements by providing possibilities for the future integration of technical systems. Therefore, the proposed design-Fabrication methodology improves future adaptation by generating flexible and accordingly more sustainable solutions.
