Abstract

This paper presents a modular, digital construction system for lightweight spatial structures made from reinforced concrete. For design and fabrication, a digital workflow is presented, which includes the rationalization ofa freeform geometry into adaptive spatial modules made up entirely ofplanar components. For fast and precise fabrication, these components are 3D printed using a novel 3D concrete printing technology called “Shotcrete 3D Printing”. The ongoing research is demonstrated by an initial real-scale prototype ofone exemplary spatial module. Lastly, the paper provides an outlook into future research, which is necessary to make this digital construction system applicable to the real-scale construction of large, wide-spanning structures.
