Abstract
Portland cement (PC) is the most used material for 3D Printing (3DP) buildings. PC has a high environmental impact due to cement emissions contributing 5% of worldwide carbon emissions. Construction and Demolition Waste (CDW) has been integrated with the material mixture for 3DP in limited projects. The application and the process have some specific considerations to ensure the stability and the quality of the 3DP structure. This paper investigates the applications and considerations of 3DP with CDW, material filtering, recycling, and mixing. The aim is to identify key factors in integrating CDW in 3DP to reduce the environmental impact of 3DP with PC. Data was collected using qualitative research methods, through conducting and analyzing semi-structured interviews with experts in 3DP, materials, and sustainable buildings. The results proved the applicability and suitability of 3DP buildings using a portion of recycled CDW with the addition of virgin concrete aggregate, water, and chemical superplasticizers. In addition to replacing the sand content with glass or rubber and substituting the cement content with Fly Ash (FA) or Silica Fume (SF). Plastic waste can be used as reinforcement to reduce the needed cement in the mix. It also highlighted challenges regarding CDW location, type, and quality that affect the environmental benefits of these integrations.
