Abstract

The widespread popularity of additive manufacturing (AM), more colloquially referred to as '3D printing' suggests a revolution in manufacturing and construction technologies. Additive manufacturing devices are now so economical that home improvement stores are marketing them to do-it-yourself (DIY) home improvement market. Rapidly maturing AM applications and material choices include metals, polymers, and ceramics but concrete has not achieved the same level of acceptance or advancement. Isolated and prototypical AM concrete applications have been implemented but widespread adoption may require intense material science research and technological innovations. The challenges and opportunities of AM using concrete are reviewed.
